Red’s Moving, Inc. Shares Tasks You Might Forget When Moving

It’s Easy to Forget To Do Certain Tasks During the Moving Experience

There are plenty of tasks you might forget when moving, believe it or not. Things that people forget when moving are often tasks they need to remember to do or essentials they immediately need. Tasks like remembering to redirect mail and separate essentials might seem obvious things you’d do, but they’re often overlooked. You also might not consider tasks such as remembering to transfer records and get meter readings at both homes.

Don’t Forget to Redirect Mail and Transfer Records (Medical, School, Vet, etc.)

Most people don’t forget to do a change-of-address form when moving, but you’ll still need to redirect mail in other ways. If you’re moving within the same mail route, ask your postal carrier to redirect mail and inform the post office. You might also want to create mailing labels with your new address on it. That way the occupants of your old address can use them to redirect mail to your new place.

Unless you’re moving within the same town, you’ll need to transfer records for the kids’ school, doctor’s office, and veterinarian. To transfer records from school to school, ask the former school central office to send them to the new school. Once you find a new medical provider and veterinarian, you’ll probably need to sign a release form. That way, your former doctor and vet can transfer records to your new providers. You’ll also need to transfer records with your financial institution, insurance company, and elections/voter registration office, among other agencies.

Before Moving, Get a Meter Reading at Your Old and New Home

You’ll probably need to get the electricity and heat turned on prior to moving into your new home. If so, you should get a meter reading at your new place ASAP. By sending your own meter reading to your energy supplier, it ensures you’re not overcharged. Our company also recommend getting a final meter reading from your old place to receive an accurate last bill.

Separate Essentials You’ll Need to Locate Quickly on Moving Day

The most common task people forget to do when moving is to separate essentials from other packed items. It’s crucial to separate essentials so you can locate them quickly on moving day and in the first few days. Depending on how many you have, we recommend you separate essentials into general and personal categories. General moving day essentials include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Unopened all-purpose cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Garbage bags
  • Toilet paper
  • Scissors or box cutters
  • Extension cords and power strips
  • Screw driver
  • Hammer
  • Shower curtain(s)
  • Toiletries
