Red’s Moving, Inc. Shares Five Easy Ways to Save Money When Moving

Moving is Stressful, But It Doesn’t Have to Be Expensive

This month, we’re blogging about five easy ways to save money when moving. While we totally understand that moving is stressful, it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can cut costs by choosing to do a few, simple things. To save money while moving, you could:

  • Downsize By Donating or Selling Items and Giving Non-Perishables to the Food Bank
  • Buy Your Cleaning and Packing Supplies from the Dollar Store
  • Pack Items in Suitcases
  • Move During the Off Season

Downsize By Donating or Selling Items and Giving Non-Perishables to Food Banks

When moving, you might want to downsize by donating or selling items you don’t need anymore. You’ll want to start to downsize at least three months prior to moving. When you’re ready to downsize, start with spaces where you’re storing stuff, like the basement, attic, or closet. If you haven’t used something in the last six months or it has no sentimental value, get rid of it.

We also recommend you donate non-perishable food items to the food bank. Sometimes communities call “food banks” soup kitchens or food pantries. When you donate to food banks, you’re also helping people who can’t afford to buy all of their groceries. If you don’t know where your local food bank is, visit Feed America’s website.

Get Cleaning and Packing Supplies from the Dollar Store and Pack Items in Suitcases

The easiest way to save money while moving is buying your cleaning and packing supplies from the dollar store. You’d be surprised this store has available–cleaning spray, paper towels, mops, and garbage bags, to name a few. The dollar store also has packing tape and scissors. While you’re at the dollar store getting these supplies, see if they’ll give you boxes they haven’t broken down yet!

Besides getting boxes from the dollar store, consider packing items in suitcases. Suitcases aren’t solely for packing clothing. You can use suitcases to pack bulky and heavy items, like books. In last month’s blog, we explained the importance of separating your essentials. Suitcases are great for that! As a bonus, many suitcases have wheels, so you can easily move them from room to room.
